Jena is the second-largest city in Thuringia. It is a centre of education and research and the world‘s centre of the optical industry with companies like Carl Zeiss and Jenoptik. In 1800 the University of Jena, then the largest in Germany, was the centre of German idealism with professors like Hegel and Schiller.
