Lübeck (formerly Lubeca) is a Hanseatic city on the shores of the Baltic Sea. From the 13th century on it was the most important trading city in Northern Europe and from the 14th century on the third-largest city of the Holy Roman Empire. The old town of Lübeck has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
