Merseburg in Saxony-Anhalt is one of the oldest towns in central Germany. It was an early Königspfalz and later the capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Merseburg. It is well known for its palace with an attached cathedral and the Merseburg charms, two medieval magic spells written in Old High German.
