Mainz was founded as a stronghold in about 13 BC by the Romans. Later it developed into a city for the bishops, with a beautiful cathedral. Mainz is also famous for the St. Stephen‘s Church with stained glass windows painted by Marc Chagall. In Mainz, Johannes Gutenberg printed the world‘s first book.
