Wanfried is a small town in Hesse, directly on the border with Thuringia. It is well-known for its historic old town, with many beautiful timber-framed buildings. Wanfried is at least 1200 years old and was an important centre for trade in medieval times, with a small port at the river Werra and even a bourse.
