Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, was founded to serve as its capital in 1682. It played an important role in the American Revolution and served as a meeting place for the Founding Fathers. It was here that they signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the Constitution of the U.S. in 1787.
