Greifswald is a Hanseatic city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. From 1648 to 1815, it belonged to Swedish Pomerania, then to Prussia. During the GDR era, the historic city centre suffered severe damage but was later restored. The market square, the town hall and the city library are well worth seeing.
