Newcastle is a city on the northern bank of the River Tyne, about 15 km from the North Sea. The city developed around the Roman settlement Pons Aelius and is named after the castle built in 1080. Among its icons are the Quayside with Millennium Bridge and Tyne Bridge and the Grey’s Monument.
