Oakham

The coat of arms of Oakham

Oakham is the county town of Rutland as well as its largest town. It is known for the remains of its Norman castle and the famous Oakham horseshoes. Visiting members of royalty and peers of the realm were required to pay a horseshoe as a forfeit. For more than 500 years, this custom has been enforced.
